The commission appointed by the Valencia City Council, led by Councillor Alexis Lopez, has announced specifying their wishes in 2007 to change the symbols of our city, based on the assumption that they do not reflect the history of Valencia. With weak arguments that demonstrate a profound ignorance of our historical roots, but covered by her political power, the commission has already changed the anthem and flag, resulting in the latter case, a particularly poor result is not the best reflection of our history and has aroused the rejection of our beloved City.
In 2007 a group of university students undertook, by our own media, a proactive campaign to publicize the symbols of our city, in an attempt to awaken the public's awareness about the historical value of what they are and why we should make an effort to preserve them. This modest campaign included the creation of multimedia material (videos on youtube, power point presentations, artwork), the distribution of leaflets, banners, some posters, research literature and Web site creation ( www.valenciadeayer.com and www.simbolosdevalencia.com ) and to collect signatures in support of a proposal to come before that committee, which obviously ignored it. Unfortunately, at that time our efforts were widely echoed in the population, which may not be considered as a possible affront to the city councilor López those aspirations.
But now, with the shameful and ahistorical flag Valencian society seems to have reacted, and personalities have publicly expressed their disagreement with the flag, taking the words of many who feel a huge Valencianos rejection of this attempt to manipulate history. We in the Movement In Science we believe that we must realize that discontent in specific civic actions that allow us to preserve our symbols as an essential part of historical heritage of Valencia.
Consequently, we are again embarking on a series of actions (see details in www.simbolosdevalencia.com), among which have already formally requested the right to speak at the plenary session of the City Council to be held next week, to present our arguments and submit for consideration a proposal for Conservation of Symbols of Valencia (read HERE ). We have also begun to assist the media to inform the public and we have placed in contact with the Conejal Gladys Valentin, who has raised a voice full divergent from those of their peers council and has added their support to this just cause.
The importance of preserving our symbols
The value of a symbol, not just their ability to reflect the origins of a people, but also in its ability to attach, and therefore they can not become in reflections of a political bias. Sad and deplorable example of wrongdoing has been the change of the bicentennial shield that decorated the monumental dignity of Valencia (and represented throughout the City) by the logo of the Mayor whose management had not lasted more than two months and that, by the step, has no merit either in construction or in recovery Colossus of Valencia.
However, we can still save our symbols. Officially, to materialize the void however, should be approved on second reading Ordinance reform of 1994 that specifies and legalizes our symbols. Valencia If we organize effectively and undertake joint actions to his defense, we believe we can defend our flag, anthem and coat of the whims of politicians circumstantial. We believe that a people can be proposed to build a better future, you must first understand and appreciate its past. Therefore, we in the Movement Science are committed to this cause and invite you to help us preserve this vital part of our Heritage for future generations of Valencia.
